Our Story

Kitchen Farm is regenerating land in Newenham Estate in the Adelaide Hills and working with the community to create an abundant and biodiverse farm and neighbourhood.

While only in its early stages, it is envisioned this system will create long term social and environmental benefits for the region with improved well being for all who are connected to it.

The Team

Our amazing team are working hard to bring Kitchen Farm to life and create an amazing space for the community to enjoy.

“A farm for the community.”

The Farm

Kitchen Farm is rejuvenating the land within the buffer powerline easement in Newenham to create a high-quality farm and natural ecosystem. It is envisioned this will become a world-leading example of successfully integrating food production and community within a greenfield residential development.

Kitchen Farm is unfolding in an organic fashion and being developed in stages. Whilst there is already activity underway on many fronts, our first public stage will be the development of our ‘Kitchen Farm Nursery Garden’ later this year, which  includes a Council approved 3 acre productive garden and nursery and will be the primary focus of the farm for the next 12 to 18 months. The garden and nursery is considered to be a very tangible, yet manageable component of the farm, propagating seedlings and native plants for sale to the public, and growing produce for paddock-to-plate dining at Kitchen Farm Pantry.

The focus of Kitchen Farm will also be empowering resilience and wellbeing in the community, helping everyday people become educated, passionate and confident about soil health, biodiversity and growing and eating nutrient dense food.

The Pantry

In our case, the chicken came before the egg. We opened Kitchen Farm Pantry before the Farm was born. We did this because the Newenham community were in need a of a coffee shop and meeting place for their community and we wanted to secure this space for our future farm shop.

Since opening Kitchen Farm Pantry in August 2021 as a small pop-up café out of a hole in the wall of the Newenham Cottage, the Pantry has grown in to a vibrant rustic café, serving up local bites and sweet treats in a calm, welcoming and family friendly environment.

In April this year, we reinvented the Pantry once more, including some humble renovation works and most importantly the engagement of a brand new Barista Extraordinaire and Superstar Head Chef. Together we are now serving up a creative new menu, showcasing our collaboration with local suppliers as well as produce from our own garden.

We still have big plans ahead including more kitchen upgrades, as well as plans for a comprehensive Providore and Produce store. So watch this space.

Community Collaboration

We have also been very busy working with the Newenham Green Team since September 2022.

This is an initiative of Kitchen Farm and Community Living Australia, supported by Newenham and combines a group of Newenham residents and clients from Community Living Australia, who come together 3 days per week at our Pop-Up Nursery located at the original Newenham Homestead.

Our amazing Green Team has already propagated thousands of plants, constructed multiple timber nursery benches, and most importantly helped to plant thousands of plants in the Newenham verges to help build biodiversity in the environment as well as help to create an abundant and natural Adelaide Hills aesthetic.

The Green Team will actively participate in the operations of Kitchen Farm as the farm grows and develops.
